After eleven years: emotional Good-Bye on both sides

Thomas Gundert moves to second division team Wiesbaden
Thomas Gundert says his good-bye after eleven years with RSV Lahn-Dill and will try a new start in the upcoming season with the new second division team Rhine River Rhinos Wiesbaden, after a long break due to health reasons. The parting will be just as emotional for the 32-year-old as it will be for the Wetzlar Rollis, who got the player in 2003 from RSG Koblenz.
After his move to Middle Hesse Thomas Gundert developed into one of the strongest low pointers in Germany and even became a National Player. He won Silver in the 2011 European Championship in Nazareth and took part in the London Paralympics the year after. But already in 2010 he and his team RSV had won the World Cup for the first time in the history of the club.
Thomas had played his last game with the Wetzlar Rollis already on the 1st of December against Cologne 99ers, before three surgeries on his bowels forced him into a long break from basketball. He has won ten German Championships, ten German Cups as well as five Champions Cups with RSV. “We were hoping to see Thomas in our second team next season, to get back into his old self. We are sorry about his decision but of course we respect it.” says RSV-manager Andreas Joneck, adding “This parting is obviously emotional for all of us. We want to give our thanks to Thomas for the past eleven years. We wish him all the best for his future for his new start after his injury and we hope he finds what he is looking for as a player in Wiesbaden.”
Thomas Gundert himself says: „It was a brilliant time with RSV, I have always felt comfortable and wouldn’t want to miss any of those years with the club. But the time has come to end the era after eleven years. I think that I couldn’t have gained the same experiences and successes with any other club in the world. A huge thank you to those who have accompanied me during this time, and most of all a massive thank you to our great, unique and wonderful fans!”
Due to Rhine River Rhinos Wiesbaden’s promotion into the second division RSV-fans will get a chance to see Thomas Gundert in action this upcoming season though, as they will be playing RSV II on the 7th of February at August-Bebel-Sporthalle.
