A sporty and emotional review of the year

We wish you a merry, thoughtful, and healthy Christmas

For many of us, the Christmas tree should already be in our own living room and after a challenging year the anticipation of contemplative and quiet days in the circle of loved ones is great. However, a look back at the past twelve months shows that despite all the adversities, 2021 was also a very successful year.

The year began on 23 January with a Hessenderby in Wiesbaden and ended with a Hessenderby on 20 November in Frankfurt. RSV Lahn-Dill played a total of 26 competitive matches last year, with Thomas Böhme & Co. rolling off the floor as the winner in 24 of them. The basket balance of 2024 to 1427 points is quite impressive. But let’s take a chronological look at some exemplary highlights:

Saturday, March 6th, 2021

The first sporting highlight was undoubtedly the 82:54 Kanter victory against the Thuringia Bulls, whose winning streak ended spectacularly. It was a day on which the team of the coaching team Janet Zeltinger and Günther Mayer impressively flashed the potential they have. If the ranks in the Rittal Arena had not been orphaned due to corona, it would have been an even bigger celebration.

Sunday May 2nd, 2021

Almost two months later, with the Champions Cup final round in Wetzlar, not only another sporting but above all a logistical challenge awaited RSV Lahn-Dill and its surroundings. Isolated teams, whose points of contact were purely related to the playing field and over 1000 all negative antigen tests were the deserved reward for a highly complex event and at the same time the proof that the concept developed over months has worked. With a 61:59 in the quarterfinals over Gran Canaria, a 76:61 semi-final triumph over Madrid and a 71:67 final victory over the Thuringia Bulls, the logistical one also became a sporting masterpiece in the end.

Saturday May 15th, 2021

The great emotions in the European premier class were followed by the sporting disappointment in the playoff final for the German Championship. In Elxleben, RSV suffered their first defeat of the season in the 79:85 defeat after extra time. This was followed by the bitter 45:52 the second and last defeat of the year and thus the knockout in the title race. While RSV Lahn-Dill was allowed to celebrate internationally, this was granted nationally to the Thuringia Bulls, who were thus able to successfully defend the championship title in the RBBL.

Monday, August 23rd, 2021

Buderus becomes new main sponsor of HSG Wetzlar and RSV Lahn-Dill was the news of the day, which all three partners proudly announced in a large-scale press conference. In a unique concept between Olympic and Paralympic team sports and a globally operating company, RSV Lahn-Dill has once again underpinned its pioneering role in sport. A model project that is unique in German sport and has appeal far beyond the borders of the sports of handball and wheelchair basketball.

Sunday, September 5th, 2021

In the Paralympic final in Tokyo, five players from RSV Lahn-Dill will face each other. In the end, Brian Bell, Michael Paye and Steve Serio triumph in the US jersey with a razor-thin 64:60 over the surprise finalists Japan with Hiroaki Kozai and Reo Fujimoto. A day for the history books and not only for the five medal winners with an RSV background.

Saturday, October 2nd, 2021

After exactly 588 days without an audience, RSV Lahn-Dill and its fans celebrate an emotional reunion in the home game against the Köln 99ers and defy the insidious virus. The 68:53 victory over the Rhinelanders becomes a minor matter when captain Simon Brown rolls towards the fan block shortly before the end of the season with a heart formed from his fingers. It was the goosebumps moment of the year, excellence!

Saturday, November 20th, 2021

After a 92:61 away win at the Skywheelers in Frankfurt, RSV Lahn-Dill is autumn champion 2021/2022 in the RBBL. Eight games, eight wins, including an 85-59 victory over last year’s league third from Hannover and a 71-69 victory over the Thuringia Bulls make you look forward to the second half of the new year.

Friday, December 17th, 2021

After 2009, 2011 and 2012, RSV Lahn-Dill will be Team of the Year in Hesse for the fourth time in the club’s history. The award by the Landessportbund and Hessischer Fernsehen is the great reward for twelve months that are as challenging as they are successful. The last title in 2021 is particularly valuable, as it is a mix of audience voting and expert voting.

We would therefore like to thank all those who voted for us in this election of the year, as well as all those who have supported us so fantastically over the past twelve months. Without your loyalty to us as a fan, as a sponsor, as a friend or as a partner, none of this would have been possible. Your commitment is both an incentive and an obligation for us. We are so incredibly proud of and at the same time emotionally touched by this RSV family that once again we can hardly put it into words.

The team and management of RSV Lahn-Dill would therefore like to wish you all a happy, contemplative and above all healthy Christmas from the bottom of our hearts. Let’s forget about the sometimes-difficult everyday business for all of us this year for a few days and focus on the really important things in life. Together we also create the greatest challenges, in sport as well as in society.

Your RSV Lahn-Dill
